Lionel Messi has been leading FC Barcelona for over a decade and his legacy will always be remembered. All good things must come to an end, and sooner or later, Messi and Barcelona’s romance will have to end whenever he decides to hang up his boots.

One of the major challenges for the Barcelona management is to replace their ageing players. The club is still looking for a replacement for Xavi, who left the club in 2015. While Arthur has started to show some signs, he is still not there. This shows that replacements for such legends must be eased into the system. They cannot be pushed into the vacuums created by the departure of legends like Xavi, Iniesta. Now, this brings us to the discussion about Lionel Messi’s departure. Imagine the riots that would occur if the greatest player ever to step foot on the Camp Nou leaves!

Lack of Options

At the moment, no one in the Barcelona squad seems capable of stepping into his shoes. No one has the ability to fill the void that would be created by Messi’s inevitable departure. The vision, the passing, the clutch goals. Everything would be gone. Messi’s presence is enough to make an impact on the entire dressing room. It cannot be replicated. With time, Barcelona has become more and more dependent on Messi for everything, be it passing, creating chances etc. Messi has been their top player in each and every competition and he is also aware of the repercussions of his departure from Camp Nou.

The Board

The club can prepare for “Life after Messi” while he is still here. However, the Barcelona board’s poor management has been exposed on multiple occasions by Messi. He has always believed in the ideology of “more than a club” and he will not let it be ruined due to the board’s poor management. Barcelona must work on a new system to prepare for “Life after Messi”. A system that does not revolve around one player and is dependent on the whole team. And they must start working on this right now! Now, if they implement the new system quickly and it fails, the Messi Magic will still be around to rescue their ship. However, if Barcelona does this after he leaves, then they could get themselves in big trouble.

What is even more frustrating is that the Barcelona board has not been thinking about this. They must start working on this matter to secure their future. If they don’t start working now, Barcelona’s legacy could be in jeopardy. They know that Messi is playing his final years at Camp Nou and the club should work harder for life after Messi.
